JAMESTOWN – The local chapter of the American Red Cross has had a busy past few weeks. In addition to being on standby to provide assistance to areas affected by Superstorm Sandy, the Red Cross of Southwestern New York is also helping several people in the Jamestown area and in other parts of its service area.
On Sunday, the local chapter opened a shelter at Alfred State College following an apartment explosion in Alfred, NY. The shelter is designed to help provide the victims not only with temporary shelter, but also food and clothing. The agency will also work with the families to provide support during their recovery process.
The Red Cross’s local Disaster Action Team (DAT) also responded late last week to provide disaster relief following an apartment fire on Palmer Street in Jamestown. The fire broke out on November 8 after an unidentified man allegedly set himself on fire and ran into the basement of the home. Temporary housing, clothing, and meals have been offered to those who lived in the home to help address emergency needs.
All disaster assistance offered by the American Red Cross is complimentary and made possible by contributions from both local residents and those living across the country. The United Way organizations of Chautauqua County also provide financial support to the local Red Cross mission.
