JAMESTOWN – Area residents and professionals who are looking for living space downtown now have a new location to consider. The ribbon was cut Wednesday afternoon to mark the completion of a $7.4 million renovation effort of the Wellman Building at the southwest corner of Third and Cherry Streets in Jamestown. Several officials were on hand to mark the occasion, including Jamestown Mayor Sam Teresi, State Senator Cathy Young and State Assemblyman Andy Goodell, who talked about the importance of the seeing the project completed.

Goodell said the apartments are also important because they provide a great opportunity for those who want to live downtown and enjoy all the amenities it has to offer.
“What we’ve seen over the last several years is a city going through its own renaissance,” Goodell said. “You’ve seen it with the facades. You’ve seen it with the parks. You’ve seen it with other buildings as well. What a great addition to that renaissance. As other city’s across the state are struggling to stay alive and their downtowns are becoming derelict, here in Jamestown we’re doing the opposite – we’re investing in the downtown, we’re moving forward with the downtown, and we’re building a future for the downtown.”

Heading up the project was Developer Jon Williams from the Jamestown Development Company IV. Williams says it was great to see so many different agencies and organizations step forward to help assist with the redevelopment effort. In addition to the 44 apartments that are available for rent, the building also has commercial space available. The building already has several tenants, including the Gebbie Foundation as well as 25 percent of the apartments already leased out to renters.
The Wellman Building was originally built in the Renaissance Revival style in 1897. Prior to the renovation, much of the facility was unused for nearly 30 years. For more information about the project, visit www.wellmanbuilding.com.
Apartments are being rented on a square-foot basis. As a result, no two apartments have the same rental rate. Monthly rent for a one or two bedroom apartment ranges from about $400 to just under $1200, plus electric.
