Mark Ruffalo, known to many for his recent role in Marvel’s “The Avengers,” and resident of Sullivan County, N.Y. has been a strong advocate against hydrofracking in New York State. Ruffalo co-founded the non-profit organization Water Defense, which has brought greater awareness and built an advocacy network for those standing up against the practice. On Friday, Ruffalo announced that he officially endorses Nate Shinagawa (D-Ithaca), Democratic candidate for New York’s 23rd Congressional District.
Shinagawa, who is running against Congressman Tom Reed (R-Corning) in a district that spans New York’s Southern Tier and Finger Lakes, says, “There is so much to lose by allowing this kind of fracking on our lands. Whether it’s poisoning our water supply or damaging local infrastructure that leads to unnecessary tax hikes, it’s not right for New York State, and it’s not right for the United States.”
The Sierra Club has also endorsed Shinagawa’s campaign. Founded in 1892, the Sierra Club is one of the oldest and largest grassroots environmental organizations in the country.
