WESTFIELD – A gas leak was the cause of an explosion that destroyed a home in Westfield on Monday morning. The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office says a home located at 8131 McKinley Road exploded and subsequently caught fire just before 11 a.m. Monday.
Following the fire, the Westfield Fire Department responded to the scene and requested assistance from the Chautauqua County Fire Investigation Team to determine the cause. Investigators determined that the cause of the incident was an accidental natural gas explosion. The home was reportedly supplied with non-odorized natural gas from an old private gas well on the property. A gas leak in the basement led to the explosion. The home was completely destroyed.
No one was at home inside the residence at the time of the incident and no injuries were reported.
