MORNING NEWS: Fuel Spill in Kiantone Leads to Closure of Rt 62

February 5, 2013 By WRFA Radio Leave a Comment

HAZMAT crews were busy Monday cleaning up after a tanker truck carrying 7,600 gallons of diesel fuel overturned on Route 62. According to a report in today’s Jamestown Post-Journal, volunteers from the Kiantone Fire Department were called to the scene just before 6:30 a.m. Monday after a United Refining tractor trailer lost control on the shoulder of the road and veered into a ravine. The rollover took place between Kiantone Road and Route 60.

The Chautauqua County HAZMAT team responded, as did firefighters from Frewsburg, Falconer, Ellery Center and Russell, Pennsylvania.  Also at the scene were the New York State Police and members of the United Refining spill response team. Less than 100 gallons of diesel fuel leaked out of the truck.

The driver, 46 year-old William D. Fisher of Erie, was transported to WCA Hospital for minor injuries.

The road was closed for about 12 hours as crews worked to clean up the spill. No charges were filed and the investigation is ongoing.
