FALCONER – A Falconer man faces more than 50 charges after being accused of deer poaching in the greater Jamestown and Falconer Area.
An investigation by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation led to the arrest of 60 year-old Bruce Giddy, who faces 54 misdemeanor charge. Officers say Giddy was allegedly using a spot light during the evening hours to shoot deer – with some of the incidents allegedly taking place within the city of Jamestown.
An article in the Jamestown Post-Journal says authorities were first tipped off by Jamestown police in November after a dead deer was located next to Bush Elementary School in the city. The shooting took place at about 6:42 p.m. on Nov. 25. A lengthy investigation found that Giddy, on at least four occasions, would allegedly shoot a deer after shining a bright light on it. The practice – known as deer jacking – is illegal in the state.
Giddy faces 46 misdemeanors for violating Environmental Conservation Law and eight penal law misdemeanors. The Falconer resident also is facing one count each of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of school property and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a factory. He recently was issued appearance tickets on the charges.
He is scheduled to be arraigned in Ellicott Court on April 16 and in Jamestown Court on April 23. Each misdemeanor carries a jail term of up to one year and fines from $200-$2,000 per charge.
