MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County Executive Greg Edwards is continuing to bang the drum for selling the Chautauqua County Home in Dunkirk. The county executive sent out a special “Monday Morning Memo” email on Friday, saying taxpayers cannot afford to keep pumping millions of dollars into the County Home to keep it afloat, and that the county needs to sell or lease the County Home and taxpayers need to have their voices heard.
Edwards comments come just days before the County Home Ad-Hoc Committee is scheduled to meet again. The panel – which is chaired by Legislator John Runkle (R-Cassadaga) – has a scheduled meeting to formally discuss cost-saving suggestions made in a recent report presented by Don Pryor from the Center for Governmental Research. Following the discussion, the committee will then make recommendations for the full legislature. The meeting is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 12 at 7 p.m. in Room 331 of the Gerace Office Building in Mayville.
In his memo, Edwards stated that more than half of the 22 members of the Ad-Hoc Committee are union employees and four of the seven legislators on the committee have stated they are opposed to a sale. As a result, Edwards is urging members of the public to attend the committee meeting and voice their feelings on how the county should approach the future of the county home.
