ALBANY – Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he has no problem with legalizing professional mixed martial arts fights — as long as its economic benefits can be demonstrated.
In an article in today’s Albany Times Union, the governor said the state is looking for economic activity wherever it can find it and that Mixed martial arts is a possible place for economic activity. Cuomo also said he was aware of the concerns of many that the sport is too brutal, but he’s satisfied that in its current model the fights could happen in New York as it does in many other states.
The governor said he hopes to address the issue before the end of the session in June; the topic hasn’t come up in his budget negotiations with legislative leaders.
