ALBANY – Governor Andrew Cuomo Tuesday was joined by members of the Women’s Equality Coalition to introduce legislation that he says is designed to end discrimination and inequality based on gender and to restore New York as a leader in women’s rights.
If enacted by the Legislature, the Women’s Equality Act will achieve pay equity, stop sexual harassment, prevent pregnancy discrimination in all workplaces, strengthen human trafficking laws and protections for domestic violence victims, end family status discrimination and protect a woman’s freedom of choice.

The Governor said that over the years, New York has fallen behind in its role as a progressive leader on women’s rights. He said the Women’s Equality Act is designed to address gender inequality in communities across the state, and to restore New York as a leader in women’s rights.
During his 2013 State of the State address, in January, the Governor had specifically pointed to a women’s rights bill as something he would work to put in place this year.
