MAYVILLE – For the first time in 16 years, the race for county executive in Chautauqua County will be an open seat. That has gone unnoticed by the county’s Democratic Party, which has made the decision to hold off on announcing its candidate for the county’s top office for a couple more weeks.
Last week, County Democratic Election Chairman Norman Green told WRFA that his party would announce its candidate for county executive this coming Wednesday, May 1. But on Friday, Republican County Executive Greg Edwards made the surprising announcement that he would not be seeking a third term in office. As a result, the county democrats have made the decision to hold off on announcing their candidate for two more weeks.
In a media release, Green said that he has asked the Democratic candidate who was to announce a county executive run this week to delay the announcement for two weeks. In the meantime, Democratic Party committee members will also extend their search process for two weeks, in order to avoid any criticism and listen to anyone else who might want to come forward. Green added that his party wants to avoid a primary and wants to hear from all prospective candidates in order to make sure they have the best possible candidate.
The County Republican Party has yet to make any public statements regarding a possible candidate for county executive.
