MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua County Legislature’s Audit and Control Committee will be meeting this morning to discuss several issues, including a local law that would benefit first-time homebuyers.
The Local law – which was already reviewed by the legislature’s Administrative Services Committee on Monday – would provide county tax exemptions for buyers of newly constructed or rehabbed properties. Proponents feel that waiving the county taxes would attract more first-time buyers.
According to an article in the Jamestown Post-Journal earlier this week, New York state already allows the five-year tax exemption. However, a local law must be established after a public hearing is held. Under the law, a property owner can receive a 50 percent tax exemption based on valuation, with a 10 percent exemption decrease each year. The tax abatement can be granted on behalf of any county, city, town, village or school district with approval from the respected governing body. The local law is being sponsored by George Borrello (R-Irving).
In addition to today’s discussion by the Audit and Control Committee, a public hearing on the local law will take place during September’s voting session.
The audit and control committee will also discuss a resolution to adjust rent for the Restaurant at the County airport. And lawmakers will also get an update on the effort to convert gas produced at the landfill into electricity.
Today’s Audit and Control Committee meeting was scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. in Room 331 of the Gerace Office Building.
