MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County Lawmakers Wednesday night were able to pass a local law amendment that will give an amnesty to renters who still have yet to comply with the county’s five percent occupancy tax law. Under the local law, they will have until Dec. 31 of this year to register their properties with the county finance department, without having to pay any back taxes. Following Dec. 31, any renter who is found to be unregistered will be required to do so, and may also be subject to paying back taxes and penalties.
The amendment was sponsored by George Borrello (R-Irving), who said he hopes it will encourage more renters to come forward. The local law change was approved unanimously by a vote of 23.
