MAYVILLE – The man who was convicted in 1999 for knowingly infecting several females with HIV, including one 13 year old, was back in Chautauqua County Court on Monday. The civil confinement case against Nushawn Williams is now underway, with the state attorney general’s office claiming the New York City native is still a threat to society.
YNN News is reporting that prosecutors called a forensic psychologist who examined Williams in 2010 to the stand. In all, about a dozen witnesses and victims in the case are also expected to testify. Meanwhile, Williams’ attorney says his client was improperly tested years ago, saying a recent examination now shows that Williams doesn’t have HIV, and is not responsible for infecting anyone.
Williams pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment and rape back in 1999. He’s already served a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison and is now being held under the state’s civil confinement law.
Testimony is set to resume Tuesday, and the trial is expected to last more than a week. It is not open to the public.
