JAMESTOWN – Jamestown City Council Members are weighing in on a $3 million expansion project being considered by The Resource Center. City officials last night said they would support the project and a related Urban Initiative Grant, on the condition the agency look into other possible locations.
The Resource Center has applied for two grants. An Urban Initiative grant, if awarded, would allow up to $200,000 toward the project. However, the grant requires a municipal resolution supporting the Resource Center’s application.
The land The Resource Center is looking to purchase is located on Harrison Street, next to Phoenix Metal Fabricating Inc. It is owned by the county Industrial Development Agency. City officials, including Jamestown Mayor Sam Teresi, have expressed concerns about the location of the building, saying they’d prefer to have it in a commercial area of the city, not an industrial area. City officials also say they would like to see the project developed by a for-profit developer.
After changing the language of the support resolution to reflect the concerns, it was approved in the council’s finance committee last night and will be considered during next week’s voting session.
