DUNKIRK – As part of a demonstration project and in an effort to encourage riders to be more active, Chautauqua Area Regional Transit System (CARTS) has recently installed bike racks on the CARTS buses that travel the two Dunkirk city fixed routes.
Officials say that CARTS plans to review this concept over the next year to determine if this is a viable project that can be initiated on the city routes in Jamestown and the rural routes.
Funding for the racks comes from Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work, and Play, a New York State Health Department initiative to promote healthy lifestyles by increasing the availability and accessibility of physical activity and eating healthy foods. The Chautauqua County Health Network administers the program in Chautauqua County and the program has recently started working in the Dunkirk area.
CARTS encourages the public to try out the new bike racks and bicyclists to use safety by wearing a helmet and following the rules of the road.
