New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is continuing his crackdown on synthetic marijuana, bath salts and other designer drugs. The state’s top law enforcement official has filed lawsuits in 12 counties – including Erie County – against head shop retailers who he says are breaking state labeling laws.
According to LegislativeGazette.com, an undercover investigator for the Attorney General’s Office purchased a bath salt-type substance and salvia, a hallucinogenic, as well as related paraphernalia. Similar purchases have been made across the state, illustrating the ease at which people can purchase the designer drugs, many of which can lead to dangerous situations.
Schneiderman’s lawsuits do not address the heart of the designer drug legality issue – which is banning them outright – but they do signal that the state will not allow marketing the products with misleading names. Despite state and federal efforts, the makers of designer drugs can keep their products legal by changing formulas ahead of legislative bans.
