POLAND – The Jamestown Post-Journal says an area resident escaped serious injury after being stranded in the water of Cassadaga Creek in the town of Poland for half-an-hour while only clinging to a tree branch.
The incident occured on Monday afternoon near Quaint Road when the unidentified man was kayaking in hte creek when he was knocked into the water after being struck by a low-hanging tree branch. The man clung to a branch while in the water and yelled for help until he was heard by a nearby homeowner. Kennedy fire crews were then called and responded and helped the man make it to land.
Two firefighters wearing wet suits walked in waist-deep water and secured the man. He was brought back to the road in an ATV and later transported to UPMC Chautauqua for treatment.
It’s unknown if the kayaker had a life jacket with him but fire officials said it didn’t appear the man was wearing one when he was located.
Kennedy, Falconer and Frewsburg volunteer firefighters all responded to the scene.
