MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua County Legislature will be holding its monthly meeting Wednesday night in Mayville and lawmaker could see a large turnout from local pet owners and animal rights activists.
Joe Donisi, a Jamestown resident whose dog Rocky was shot and killed last Friday by a Chautauqua County Sheriff Deputy, told WRFA he plans to attend Wednesday’s meeting.
Donisi said that Rocky, a 10-year-old boxer, had no prior history of attacking or going after anyone, was shot by Deputy Robert Holcomb, who claims he thought the dog was going to attack him and had to make a split-second decision. The incident happened on the north side of Jamestown on Newton Ave., in front of Donisi’s house and in the middle of the afternoon.
Donisi said he plans to address the legislature during its public comment session.
“I plan on speaking, so that it’s not only put on record that this incident happened, but that they take action and pass new laws that call for cops to be better trained on how to deal with dogs that could be attacking them, rather than reaching for their gun first,” Donisi said.
Donisi added that he may also pursue legal action against the Sheriff’s office and Deputy Holcomb.
He also said that a rally will take place prior to the meeting, with supporters and fellow pet owners expected to be on hand starting at 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday’s meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Gerace Office Building and is open to the public.
