May 8, 2017 By WRFA Radio Leave a Comment

Originally airing Friday, April 28, 2017.

WRFA Public Affairs Director Jason Sample talks with Dr. Neil Flory, Jamestown Community College music coordinator, about the upcoming appearance and programs featuring saxophone virtuoso and artist-in-residence Andy Wen.

Wen is a founding member of the Arkansas Saxophone Quartet. His schedule of performances include a solo recital at 7 p.m. on May 7 at JCC’s Scharmann Theatre. Dr. Wen will also conduct a master class for saxophonists and woodwind performers at 4 p.m. on May 9.

As part of JCC’s spring music department concert on May 9, Dr. Wen will perform with the JCC concert band during the New York premiere of Dr. Flory’s new Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble. The work, which had its world premiere in February 2017, was commissioned for Dr. Wen and the Little Rock Wind Symphony.

The May 9 concert, which also features JCC’s choir and jazz ensemble, begins at 7 p.m. in Scharmann Theatre. Admission prices are $4, general public, $3, senior citizens and area students, and $2, JCC FSA members.

The residency is sponsored by JCC’s college program committee, music department, arts, humanities, and health sciences division, and Faculty Student Association.
