JOHN F. KENNEDY ASSASSINATION

On November 22, 1963 I was twelve years old, seated in Mr. Uri’s Mechanical Drawing class at Niagara Falls New York’s North Junior High School, when my concentration…hand drawing arrow heads on graph paper….was broken by the squelch of the school’s PA system.
Ed O’Connor, the vice principal, instructed us to return to our home rooms where distribution of the first Ten Week report card would take place. It was three hours before the expected end of the normal school day.
In that home room we were told that President John F. Kennedy had been shot in Dallas, Texas. No more than that. We were dismissed and told to go straight home.
That Friday afternoon, my mother, kid brother Marc and I sat in front of the television set listening to the reports from Walter Cronkite, waiting for a final word on the president’s fate, quietly struck by the horror…though it would be several years before I completely understood just how horrible it was.
In the decades since, I have read and absorbed literally hundreds of books, on line articles, films, and radio broadcasts, held conversations with historians and poets and garbage men, taking notes all the while in hopes that somewhere in the morass of information both true and speculative, lay the answer to the question…..
Who killed John F. Kennedy and why?
It poses what I have concluded, are the 100 unanswered questions, which if answered, would bring us closer to knowing the truth.
There are individuals still alive, I conjecture, who were part of the mix that day.
Self serving justifications and that simple commission of their perfect crime are the hallmark of their covert rationale.
The act destroyed not only a man and his family but a generation of young people wide eyed and blushing in the robust America built by our fathers in post World War II.
We were left in disbelief and that disbelief resonates in Americans to this day.
Over the course of the American Studies series, I’ll return to the JFK Assassination every few weeks, posing questions.
Let me begin with this:
Were their two Lee Harvey Oswald’s? John Anderson, a retired Texas Architect spent a full decade researching the question and among the 900 pages of his book (Harvey and Lee) are fully documented medical, school and military records showing two persons using the same name and in different places at the same time.
Mr. Anderson defines “Harvey” as a Slavic immigrant fluent in Russian, and the man murdered by Jack Ruby. Lee is the real Oswald. He concludes that their identities were merged in the late 50’s through the use of Marine Corp records……………but the duplicate records not lost or destroyed………from grade school through military service paint a different picture.
Let me run down just some of the discrepancies’ Mr. Anderson found.
DATE | LEE OSWALD | HARVEY OSWALD |
1953, fall semester | Lee attends Public School 44 (PS44) in New York City | Harvey attends Beauregard Junior High School in New Orleans |
1954 | Lee and his mother live at 1454 St. Marys in New Orleans | Harvey and the Marguerite Oswald impostor live at 126 Exchange in New Orleans |
1955, spring | Lee is in the 9th Grade at Beauregard JHS | Harvey is working full time at Dolly Shoe (and was fired by Louis Marzialle) |
1956 | Lee’s mother is living at 3830 W. 6th St. in Ft. Worth, TX | Harvey, Robert, and the Marguerite Oswald impostor are living at 4936 Collinwood |
1957 | Lee joins Student Squadron 3383 at Radar School in Biloxi, MS | Harvey is at the same Radar School, but in Student Squadron 3386 |
1958 | Lee is in the U.S. Marine Corps in Japan | Harvey is working at Pfisterer Dental Lab in New Orleans |
1959 | Lee is with CIA sponsored anti-Castro guerilla groups in LA and FL | Harvey “defects” to the Soviet Union |
1960 and 1961 | Lee visits Bolton Ford in New Orleans and asks about purchasing trucks to send to Cuba.
He is identified by the sales manager and staff after the assassination. |
While Harvey is still in Russia, FBI director Hoover writes a memo discovered 25 years later, stating someone may be impersonating Oswald |
1962, April | Lee visits Texas Employment Commission (XIX, p. 399) filing for unemployment | Harvey is still in the Soviet Union, now with his wife and daughter |
1963 | Lee sets up Harvey as the “patsy” for the assassination of JFK, at the shooting range by shooting at other people’s targets and explaining he thought he was shooting at Kennedy. | Harvey is working at the Texas School Book Depository on the same day and time as the shooting range incident. |
Nov. 22, 1963 | At least five eyewitnesses see Lee depart Dealey Plaza in a Nash Rambler station wagon including Deputy Sherriff Roger Craig | Harvey departs Dealey Plaza via bus and taxi, as stated in the Warren Commission Report |
Afternoon of Nov. 22 | Lee is seen driving a 1957 blue two-tone Plymouth with license plates belonging to J.D. Tippit’s best friend, Carl Mather, who worked for Collins Radio (Later found to be a CIA contract front company). | Harvey is sitting in the Dallas jail. He claims he is “just a patsy,” but is soon murdered by Jack Ruby, who formerly ran guns to Cuba. |
These are just a few of the hundreds of documented discrepancies indicating two Lee Harvey Oswalds. For more on this topic, check out “Harvey and Lee” by John Anderson. Excerpts are available on the world wide web.

Comments from an old friend says
Your commentary set off a heated discussion in my family. It pertained to a corollary issue..ongoing gun violence in our country. Whether Oswald acted alone or was a ploy in a larger strategy to kill President Kennedy, effective regulations to control the use of guns in this county remain elusive. Newtown, CT, Aura, CO and Charleston, SC reflect our history of irrational gun policies.
I think president Obama said it well this week in response to the shootings in Charleston:
“This type of mass violence doesn’t happen in other advanced countries. It doesn’t happen in other places with this kind of frequency”.
Enjoyed your commentary John and it led to a very good discussion…we just took a correlative path.
