BUFFALO – The National Weather Service has issued a lake effect snow warning for Chautauqua County and much of Western New York until 1 a.m. Wednesday with additional snow expected through New Year’s Day and into Thursday.
According to forecasters, in addition to snow over the next 48 hours, an area of low pressure moving from the Ohio valley to the Mid Atlantic and will bring widespread accumulating snow to the region Wednesday night through Friday. Very cold weather will persist much of the week from tonight through Friday. Wind chills will occasionally become bitterly cold, especially Wednesday night through Friday night.
The forecast is calling for accumulations of 4 to 7 inches today and 3 to 6 inches tonight, leading to storm totals of 6 to 12 inches in the most persistent lake snows.
Westerly winds will also be blowing at 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph, producing some blowing and drifting snow.
Anyone who will be traveling today and tonight is advised to use caution getting to and from their destination.
