JAMESTOWN – Jamestown Community College is selling off one of its most well-known and prized off-campus assets.
Sheldon House – which sits near the intersection of Falconer St. and Lakeview Ave. and has served as a guesthouse and facility for special events for nearly 40 years – is being placed on the market. JCC’s board of trustees, citing increased maintenance costs and diminishing funds in the college budget to support Sheldon House, has determined that the well-known facility no longer serves to advance the college’s central mission.
Sheldon House was built in 1860 and rebuilt in 1925. It was gifted for the benefit of JCC in 1977 by Julia Sheldon Livengood. The house functioned as a private residence through much of its history.
Sheldon House is located at 9 Falconer St., Jamestown. The college did not provide an asking price, but the property is valued at $425,000.

Sounds wonderful as the Sheldon House would make a great B& B. Nice that Mr. Patti bought the M&T building. Will be pleased to see that green sign come off the building and see the original signage which is part of the building.

i don’t know what George Patti would do with it, but I would like to think he would restore it and lease it out as a bed and breakfast. I am sad to see it sold, I thought it was donated to JCC with restrictions. But that may all have been properganda when it was donated in ’77
As an unaffected outsider, I am part of a group that studies the survival of small and large colleges and universities in the U.S. From a fiscal point of view, this is a smart move. Other schools have hung on to assets that bled them of funds needed for their core mission. Ultimately the entire school would fail. I am sensitive to the precedent, the intent of the donation and the use of the building to grow the college. These are hard pills to swallow, but it’s the right move to keep the college afoot, as hard as it may be.
