JAMESTOWN – Three and a half full-time equivalent positions have been removed from the potential cut list in the Jamestown Public Schools District. That’s according to an article in today’s Jamestown Post-Journal, which says superintendent Deke Kathman and assistant superintendent for administration Dale Weatherlow have reviewed the numbers between the school board’s Feb. 21 meeting and Tuesday night’s meeting and were able to remove three full-time equivalent middle school classroom teachers and one half of a full-time equivalent guidance counselor position from the potential cut list for next year’s budget.
The 2012-13 budget’s first draft had expenditures of $77,742,505, an increase of $3,287,876 from last year. After increases in state aid and the end of short-term federal aid, the district found itself with a projected gap of $1,270,671.
Kathman said during Tuesday night’s meeting that there is an assumption that the Jamestown Public Schools will be receiving a small amount of money from Albany in the new budget, which will then work against the district’s reduction list. He says a final budget recommendation may be ready by March 27, the next time the school board will meet. That depends, however, on whether lawmakers in Albany will have their budget finalized by then.
