MAYVILLE – The Jamestown man accused of assaulting his 6-month-old son last year has reached a plea deal with the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office.
YNN News is reporting that 21 year-old Steven Spencer pleaded guilty to the reckless assault of his infant son Dakota in the summer of 2014. Spencer was also facing an intentional assault charge last year, which has since been dropped.
The DA’s office claimed that Spencer shook and injured Dakota last summer, causing the baby to seek treatment at Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. The child, who is now one and a half, is out of the hospital but is still involved with therapy as a result of his injuries, according to attorney’s from both sides who are involved with the case.
Jury selection in the case was set to begin Tuesday. With the plea deal, Spencer will avoid a trial. He’s scheduled to be sentenced on February 19.
