JAMESTOWN – Members of the public who wish to comment on Jamestown’s 2016 budget will have the opportunity to do so Monday during the city council’s budget hearing.
The hearing is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16 in the council chambers on the 2nd floor of city hall.
So far, the council has yet to make any changes to the mayor’s $35.1 million executive budget, which is calling for a tax hike of 5.6 percent.
During the past several council meetings, city officials have met with various department heads to go over their proposed budget. The budget review process will conclude Monday following the budget hearing, when the council holds a work session and meets with representatives from the James Prendergast Library, the Fenton History Center, and the Jamestown Area Senior Center.
The mayor is proposing a cut of $15,000 for the library in 2016 – bringing the city’s contribution down to $350,000. A cut of $5,000 is also being proposed for the senior center. Officials with both agencies say the cuts would have a significant impact on services if they were to stay in place.
The budget deliberations and meetings with the local agencies will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Mayor’s Conference Room (4th Floor City Hall) following the budget hearing. Both meetings are open to the public.
The city council has until the end of this month to amend and finalize the city budget, otherwise the one presented by the mayor will go into effect.
