JAMESTOWN – The Jamestown Board of Public Utilities is warning customers about a telephone scam that has been attempted on at least three local businesses.
BPU officials say the businesses have received calls from an “866” area code from someone claiming to be from the BPU and demanding that they pay their electric bill within 45 minutes or it would be shut off. The caller tells the business to purchase a money order and a local department store or convenience store nd call back to pay the bill.
BPU officials are warning businesses and residents not to fall for the scam. The BPU only accepts payment at it’s Customer Service office, City Clerk’s office, Ellicott Town Clerk’s office, on-line and at official drop boxes.
