MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office has yet to release the name of the prisoner who died in the Chautauqua County Jail last week, but his family is speaking out to the media and have given permission to reveal his identity.
The family of 28-year-old Gregory Gallaway of Dunkirk spoke to a buffalo area TV station this week, saying that prior to his arrest he was battling addiction. Gallaway had been participating in the City of Dunkirk’s Drug Court, with some success, but he relapsed, and knew he would fail his urine test.
The family convinced him to turn himself in to authorities to deal with his legal issues and also get help for his drug problem. Instead, they were informed that the day after he turned himself in, Gallaway was found dead in his cell, last Thursday, April 11, and the cause has yet to be determined.
Chautauqua County authorities say the are not sure how Gallaway died, only adding at the time of the announced death that “there is no suspicion of foul play.” Medical examiners from Erie County have told the family the cause is still under investigation.
