Tuesday is Earth Day, and more than a billion people around the world will celebrate.
Earth Day began in 1970, when 20 million people across the United States rallied for increased protection of the environment. By the end of 1970, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had been established, and efforts to improve air and water quality were gaining political traction.
Since the first Earth Day, environmentalism has moved from a fringe issue to a mainstream concern, with communities across the country recognizing Earth Day and holding events.
Locally, Jamestown Community College’s annual Earthfest to celebrate Earth Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23.
