ALBANY – Local law enforcement in Chautauqua County will be getting more than $150,000 in funding to help combat gun violence.
On Tuesday Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that 17 different counties in the state – including Chautauqua – will be participating in the state’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative, with a total of $13.3 million in funding going to local police departments.
Now entering its second year, the initiative requires the use of proven strategies to reduce shootings and firearm-related homicides in various communities across the state.
Locally, the funding will allow the Jamestown Police Department, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, DA’s office and County Office of Probation to continue its “Hot-spots policing” strategy – which allows law enforcement to focus resources on persistent criminal activity. Some of the funding will also be used to target domestic violence.
The 17 participating counties are:
-Erie County
-Monroe County
-Westchester County
-Onondaga County
-Suffolk County
-Nassau County
-Schenectady County
-Albany County
-Orange County
-Niagara County
-Oneida County
-Rensselaer County
-Broome County
-Dutchess County
-Ulster County
-Chautauqua County
