NEW YORK – Governor Andrew Cuomo is kicking off the “Enough is Enough” awareness campaign to highlight the state’s new law to combat sexual violence on college campuses.
The law takes effect this semester.
During the kickoff in New York City, the governor said the new campaign is aimed at addressing what he calls a chronic problem in our society.
“If you don’t acknowledge the problem you are condemning yourself to live with it forever,” the governor said. “And the sexism and the discrimination is chronic and it is pervasive. Domestic violence is a chronic problem in this state and in this nation that we’ve failed to come to terms with. That we fail to admit. We have more animal shelters than domestic violence shelters and we don’t want to admit that we have a problem with violence against women.”
As part of the effort, Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul and Special Adviser Christine Quinn will be visiting campuses statewide to meet with students, faculty and staff to discuss the new law and distribute informational cards.
Cuomo also announced that the State Police’s new sexual assault victims unit has opened up to provide investigative support and help to victims of sexual violence, as well as training and law enforcement aid for schools and local police departments statewide in line with the new law.
