SHERMAN – Four young adults from the Amish community near Sherman face charges following the collision of an Amish buggy with a Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department patrol car over the weekend.
Sheriff Deputies were responding to a report of an underage drinking party on Heslink Hollow Road. While heading to the location, deputies encountered several Amish buggies traveling north and taking up both lanes of traffic on Clymer Hill Road. The patrol vehicle hit one of the buggies and it flipped onto its side. No one was seriously hurt, but several containers of alcoholic beverages were found in both buggies.
Police say 20 year-old Marty Troyer Panama was operating the buggy that was hit by the patrol vehicle and admitted to having a party at his property. Two other passengers – ages 18 and 19 – along with a 20 year old who was operating the other buggy – were all charged with underage possession of alcohol. Troyer was additionally charged with unlawfully dealing with a child because he was hosting the party. All four will appear in Sherman Town Court at a later date.
