JAMESTOWN – Surrounded by over 1,600 farms, Jamestown has a lot to celebrate when it comes to agriculture, as well as small business.

One city event that supports this important aspect of the community each week is the Jamestown Public Market. Host to over 14 vendors every Saturday, the market offers a community gathering space for locals and visitors alike to find home-grown products, locally raised produce, and artisan goods created by local entrepreneurs.

According to Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County, for every $1 of income created by the agricultural industry, $2.29 is generated in the local economy.

“The Jamestown Public Market is a weekly celebration of what it means to support local, shop local, and enjoy local,” explains Linnea Carlson, Public Market Manager. “Not only can you visit with our local farmers and vendors, you can find beautiful products unique to the area, and visit with your friends and neighbors. The market is such a positive, fun environment, full of live music, delicious treats and the positive spirit of our city.”

Wanting to reinforce the value of the public market, the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation, current operational managers of the market, approached the city and Mayor Sam Teresi to be a part of its official ‘National Farmers Market Week’ kickoff event in recognition of the national week of celebration.

On Saturday, Aug. 3, Teresi, issued a proclamation declaring Sunday August 4, through Saturday August 10 as Farmers Market Week in the City of Jamestown.

Teresi emphasized the importance of shopping at the local market, stating, “Make sure you take the opportunity to walk up one side of the street and down the other…stop in and enjoy each one of the vendors, because they are not just farmers  they are artists, craftsman. They deliver beautiful product, healthy, locally produced, profits stay here in our community, profits giving back in many ways to help revitalize downtown Jamestown.”

Carlson says that she, the market staff, and most importantly the market’s farmers and vendors are much appreciative of the support and the city’s gracious acknowledgement of their hard work.

The public can show their support of the public market during both National Farmers Market Week and beyond. The August 10 market will be filled with several family fun activities, including live entertainment with local standup comedians Karate Sleepover and a visit from the Simply Sweet Ice Cream Truck.

Community members can show their support on social media by sharing photos of their market visit with the hashtag #lovemymarket. Individuals are also encouraged to shop local whenever they can, be it by visiting the Saturday market, supporting the Jamestown Mobile Market, or visiting local farm stands and businesses.
