DUNKIRK, NY – Traffic on the New York Thruway in Dunkirk was suspended Thursday night as authorities worked to talk down a despondent individual who was threatening to jump from an overpass.
The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s office was called to the overpass on Route 60 in the town of Dunkirk at about 11pm Thursday after receiving a report of a despondent subject.
Upon arrival, deputies observed a subject on the outside of the safety fence, standing on the ledge of the bridge that passes over the interstate.
Officers on scene spoke with the subject for some time, eventually persuading the subject to make his way back across the ledge and off the overpass. He was then transported by deputies to Lakeshore Hospital for a mental health evaluation. Once the subject had reached safety, traffic was reopened on the thruway.
