MAYVILLE – The first trial involving the four Elmira men accused of driving to Chautauqua County and killing a Frewsburg Couple will in less than a month.
The double murder trial for Davide Coggins will begin on Sept 16. Coggins, along with three other men, was arrested for the murder of Gordon and Joyce Skinner in their town of Carroll home, which took place in April 2013. Authorities say Coggins was the ring leader of the group and convinced the others to drive to Chautauqua County to burglarize the Skinner home on Wheeler Hill Rd.
According to an article in Thursday’s Post-Journal, a pretrial hearing in the Coggins’ case took place Wednesday in County Court with three more witnesses taking the stand. All three were in law enforcement from the Horseheads, NY and believed to be in contact with Coggins shortly after his arrest. According to the article Coggins’ attorney – public defender Ned Barone – was trying to establish that his client had requested an attorney while being questioned by police.
Following the testimony, Barone requested that he be given more time to review evidence prior to continuing with the pretrial hearing. The judge gave him until Friday.
In addition to Coggins, three other men were also charged in connection to the crime – including 22 year-old Joshua McCormick and Ricky Knickerbocker and Steven Todd – both 18 years-old at the time of the murders.
Coggins and McCormick are facing two counts of first-degree murder. Because of their age at the time of the incident, Knickerbocker and Todd were each charged with two counts of second-degree murder charge. However, earlier this year, county District Attorney David Foley announced that Todd had accepted a plea deal on two counts of first degree manslaughter and as a result, he will testify against the other defendants.
