MAYVILLE – The effort to finalize the district boundaries for the Chautauqua County Legislature will continue this evening in Mayville. The county’s Reapportionment Commission will continue the effort of redrawing the county legislature districts to match the latest population numbers from the 2010 census. In addition, the panel is charged with drawing just 19 districts, after lawmakers passed a resolution that officially set the size of the legislature at 19 representatives.
The reduction came on the heels of last November’s referendum calling for a reduction of the legislature from the current 25 members to a number no greater than 19. That referendum received widespread support from the public. The commission now has until early in 2013 to finalize a plan and present it to lawmakers for approval. However, members have said they’d like to get the lines drawn sooner if possible.
Tonight’s meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Gerace Office building and is open to the public.
