MAVYILLE – The effort to sell the Chautauqua County Home continues tonight in Mayville with a special legislature meeting. Tonight’s meeting won’t involve the legislature taking any action, but it will allow lawmakers to meet with representatives of VestraCare, which is offering to purchase the home for $16 million.
This will be the second attempt by the downstate company to purchase the county home. It made an offer to purchase the home last October, but the sale failed by one vote in the legislature.
This time, the legislature needs 13 of the 19 members to approve the sale and all indications show that there are enough votes for it to go forward. Proponents say selling the home will remove unnecessary costs in county government, while opponents of the sale say privatization will reduce the quality of care for the resident at the Dunkirk-based facility.
Tonight’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. with an executive session, followed by the public meeting between the legislature and vestracare. Again, no vote will take place during tonight’s meeting, which is open to the public.
