MAYVILLE – A flood watch and flood warning, along with a high wind warning, remain in effect today for Chautauqua County and western New York. The National Weather Service says the flood warning for low lying areas will stay in effect until 5 p.m. today, while the flood watch will stay in effect until 6 p.m. tonight. Meanwhile, the high wind warning will continue until late this afternoon.
The wet weather has lead to county officials reminding residents to be prepared in the event they are involved in a flood situation.
County Health and Human Services director Christine Schuyler says conditions such as this can turn dangerous at any time and officials are urging everyone to take the necessary precautions to protect their health and safety.
During flooding, the greatest threat comes from moving water. The deeper the moving water, the greater the threat. Officials say residents need to:
- Listen for evacuation orders.
- Do not drive around barricades.
- Turn around if you come to a flooded road, whether driving or walking.
- If your car stalls in rapidly rising water, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground.
Residents are also reminded to not go in or near pooling water, as it may be contaminated, the actual depth may not be known and may be life-threatening if exposed electrical wiring is nearby. They are reminded to keep their children and pets away from standing or pooling flood waters as well.
