MAYVILLE – It may only be April, but Democrats in Chautauqua County are starting to think about the November elections – with several candidates being endorsed to run against Republican incumbents.
For the newly formed 23rd Congressional District, county Democrats have endorsed a candidate to run against Tom Reed (R-Corning). which stretches across much of the southern tier and includes Chautauqua County. Ithaca resident Nate Shinagawa, who currently serves as the vice-chair of the Tompkins County Legislature, has received the support of Chautauqua County Democrats. However, he still may have to face other candidates in a Democratic primary.
Also, former Legislator Rudy Mueller (D-Lakewood) will run for the 150th Assembly seat against Republican incumbent Andy Goodell. Mueller was the legislature’s minority leader until the end of last year, when he chose not to run for re-election.
In addition, county democrats have tapped current legislator William Coughlin (D-Fredonia) to run for County Court Judge. Prior to serving on the legislature, Coughlin served as a county public defender before being replaced by a Republican. He also has worked in the district attorney’s office. Coughlin was elected to the county legislature for the first time during last November’s election.
