MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County Executive Vince Horrigan announced Friday that the full report from his Deficit Reduction Commission is now online and available for review by the public.
The Deficit Reduction Commission was set up last fall to explore options and find solutions for closing the $5.7 million structural deficit the county will face when preparing a budget for 2016 and beyond.
The commission’s January 2015 report forecasts an operating deficit of over $6.5 million for 2017 and over $7.7 million for 2018. To close the structural deficit, the report identifies four short term recommendations, five mid to long term recommendations, and two extreme recommendations – all of which were outlined during Horrigans State of the County address in February.
One of the short term recommendations include increasing the sales tax rate by .5 percent from 7.5 percent to 8 percent and decreasing some non-mandated, local share expenses.
For two months the commission, which consists of two county legislators, two independent certified public accountants, the county finance director, and a business CEO, reviewed historic and projected revenues and expenditures of Chautauqua County Government in order to identify options to reduce the structural deficit.
