MAYVILLE – Postal Workers across Chautauqua County have started to deliver nearly 70,000 “mail check cards” to the county’s registered voters.
According to Chautauqua County Board of Election officials, State and federal law requires that most voters be contacted at least once each year to assure that each voter is still receiving mail and presumably still an active voter.
The Post Office returns mail when the voter is no longer at the address but sometimes the mail slips through their hands and is delivered. As a result, the board of elections is asking people who may receive a voter ID card for someone who no longer lives at the address to simply mark the card with their new mailing address or mark the card not at this address or deceased.
Officials say that for the Board of Elections to have up-to-date voter rolls it is vital that citizens mark and return mail addressed to someone who no longer live in the household.
