JAMESTOWN – Both county and city officials were in Jamestown Wednesday morning to hold a grand opening ceremony for the new location of the Jamestown Department of Motor Vehicles.
The Department is operated by the county clerk’s office. County Clerk Larry Barmore said its actually been open since Aug. 1 and so far, the new location has worked well.
“We’ve had a couple of glitches but it had nothing to do with our customer service,” Barmore said. “Our computers worked the second we turned them on and we do have two additional stations here where we can do full service work now. We didn’t have that in the other location [on Pine St.], so we’re getting people in and out a lot faster. The people have really commented on how they like the free parking.”
Barmore also said that the county is actually saving money at the new location to the tune of about $9,000 per year in rent and an additional $3,000 to $4,000 in parking reimbursements for employees.
The new DMV location, which is at 512 W. Third St. just before the Third St. Bridge, is actually the result of a collaboration between the city and the county. The county had initially considered moving the DMV to Fluvanna Ave. but city officials, including development director Vince DeJoy, made a case for keeping it downtown.
“The DMV has always been located in downtown Jamestown and it’s a great place to do business. There’s restaurants and other businesses down here that could be supported so it’s just the idea of having more reasons to come downtown,” DeJooy said. “Folks who live outside the city, maybe they don’t have many opportunities to come in and see all the things that are happening especially here on the west side of downtown – all that’s happening with the National Comedy Center development plans, the Ice Arena, the Train Station, and so forth.”
The new DMV is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays.
