CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY – Congressman Tom Reed will be in Chautauqua County Saturday for several town hall meetings in an effort to get feedback about the Iran Nuclear Deal.
The Corning Republican will be making stops in Frewsburg, Findley Lake and Sheridan – seeking input and feedback from his constituents regarding the deal that was reached earlier this summer by President Obama and which Congress will be voting on next month.
Reed has already gone on record saying he is against the deal for several reason, primarily because it lifts trade sanctions that will allow Iran to see a significant increase in trade revenue…
“The relief of the sanctions will unleash about, anywhere from $50 billion to $100 billion worth of cash to Iran and to this regime and I believe it will be in the hands of people that have demonstrated a complete disregard for international norms and reasonableness,” Reed said during an Aug. 10 conference call with regional media. “The rhetoric coming out of the regime, the rhetoric coming out of Iran, the anti-American [rhetoric], a commitment to terrorism, to me, is all troublesome. And to unleash this type of cash unto the world market by this regime to me is dangerous.”
Reed says he’s also against the plan because he doesn’t think it goes far enough in providing rules for monitoring the country’s nuclear energy program and he’s concerned that it does nothing to address four American prisoners who are still being held captive by the Iranian government.
As for the vote on the plan next month, Reed says that there are enough votes in place by the GOP controlled house and senate to reject the deal, although a veto override is more difficult to predict..
“I’m very confident we’ll be able to reject the deal,” Reed said. “Now, the issue of being able to override the veto, I think that’s still in flux. It’s very grey territory. But as you’re seeing a bipartisan group of members in both the House and Senate coming together, that veto wall, its something we can breach and be in a scenario where we can be in a position of strength going forward.”
Anyone who wants to share their thoughts about the Iranian deal with the Congressman is invited to attend his Town hall meetings. He said in addition, they are invited to bring forward other issues of concern as well.
Reed will be at the Carroll Town Hall, 2 Main St. in Frewsburg, at 8 a.m. Saturday. He will also be at the Findley Lake Library in Findley Lake at 10:30 and the Sheridan Town Hall at 2775 Rt. 20 at 1 p.m.
