JAMESTOWN – The issue of building a 100 foot cell tower in a residential area on Jamestown’s west side will be taken up by the city Zoning Board when it meets later this month.
The only item on the zoning board’s June agenda is a public hearing involving a request for a variance by Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems and Verizon Wireless, so a 100 foot tall wireless telecommunication tower can be built on upper Hallock Street. The location of the tower would be on property owned by the Chandler Street Baptist Church and is adjacent to 40 Hallock Street, which is in an R-1 zoned area of the city.
Under city zoning rules, cell phone towers are only permitted in a “C” or “M” district. In addition, cell phone towers shall not exceed 60 feet in height from the ground. As a result, a variance would be required in order for the 100 foot tall tower to be built.
The tower will not look like a traditional cell tower, but will instead be a “Monopine Tower” that is designed to look like a tree (as shown in the accompanying image). Similar towers have been built in other areas of the state, including Saratoga, NY.
Any person with an interest on the matter is allowed to speak during the hearing.
The zoning board meeting was originally scheduled for Wednesday, June 7. However, an announcement was sent out Tuesday that the meeting would be rescheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28. All zoning board meetings are held in the city council chambers, located on the second floor of city hall and are open to the public.
