City Zoning Board to Consider Sheldon House Variance Wednesday

JAMESTOWN – The future of the Sheldon House will likely be determined Wednesday in city hall.

The Jamestown Zoning Board of Appeals is scheduled to meet Wednesday, May 4 at 3:30 p.m. to determine if a special use variance can be issued for the Lynn Development Group to use the Sheldon House for its central office location.

Lynn Development wants to purchase the historic home from Jamestown Community College for $240,000. However, the sale hinges on whether or not the property can be rezoned for office use, since it is located on Lakeview Ave. in an area of the city zoned for residential use only.

City planning director Bill Rice had initially told WRFA following the city’s April planning board commission that the zoning variance wouldn’t be taken up until June, but it appears that is no longer the case.

Prior to the board acting on the zoning variance, the public will be allowed to offer thoughts on the matter and a number of residents from the Lakeview Ave. neighborhood are expected to be on hand to voice their opposition to the proposed variance. The group has said they would prefer the home instead remain residential.

Wednesday’s meeting begins at 3:30 p.m. in the city council chambers and is open to the public.

Perhaps the city and neighborhood has not noticed the chiropractors office across the street from the Sheldon House. Why is that business office acceptable or permitted in a residential zoned area?
