JAMESTOWN – The Jamestown City Council will be voting on a resolution to purchase the city’s police department body-worn cameras and related equipment when it meets Monday night in city hall.
City officials will vote on a $30,000 contract with Linstar, Inc. to provide 48 cameras for the department, along with other needed equipment such as cables and docking stations. In addition, the council will also act on two resolutions totaling $20,000 to cover the cost of computers are related software.
The purchase comes on the recommendation of Jamestown Police Chief and Public Safety Director Harry Snellings, who’s spent the past couple months researching various options that were available for the city. The chief said it will take some time to get the equipment in place and provide the necessary training before it’s put to use.
“If the decision is to purchase the equipment, the next step will be to finalize the [JPD’s body-worn camera] policy, get the equipment, put the infrastucture in place first -work out all those bugs – and then we’ll train our officers, and then we’ll field it,” Snellings told the council during its Sept. 21 work session.
The cost of the cameras would be covered by money left over from a communications grant the city recently received from the department of justice.
In addition to the resolutions involving body-worn cameras, the council will also act on a resolution authorizing a Neighborhood Watch Group in the area of Cowden Place on the south side of town.
Monday’s city council meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
