JAMESTOWN – The Jamestown man arrested for hanging a pit bull from a tree and then leaving it there has been sentenced to one year in jail.
The District Attorney’s Office says 48 year-old Robert Overton Jr. was sentenced Monday in Chautauqua County Court after pleading guilty to one count of aggravated cruelty to animals.
Overton was charged with animal cruelty in April 2018 after a passerby spotted a dead dog hanging from a tree in a wooded area near Hallock and Palmer streets in Jamestown.
Police said the animal was likely alive when it was hanged from the tree in late 2017 or early 2018.
Overton was arrested shortly after the animal was found.
Following the incident, Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello called for the creation of an animal abuse registry in the county and it was later approved by the legislature.
