The Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday named eight new inductees to be honored in February. The Class of 2014 will feature athletes and coaches from throughout the county, including four who were involved in athletics here in the south county.
Among those being inducted are:
Geza Farkus, Olympic gymnast born in Hungary who moved to Jamestown in 1960 and later coached gymnastics at the Lakewood YMCA;
Dan Lunetta, a Jamestown area native who is the current director of minor league operations for the Detroit Tigers;
Tom Priester, coach at Southwestern Central School for 45 years;
Jack Wigley, football, basketball, baseball, track, and volleyball star at Lakewood High School, and later played in the New York Giants farm system in the 1950s.
The four others to be inducted are:
Vincent Calarco, lifelong Westfield resident who excelled in football, basketball, baseball, and track as a player and coached basketball, football, softball, and baseball;
Cindy Miller, former Dunkirk and current Silver Creek resident who has played on the LPGA Tour;
Al Muck, graduate of Forestville High School who played four minor league baseball seasons in the Kansas City A’s farm system in the 1960s;
Tom Prechtl, former Dunkirk and Fredonia resident who excelled in basketball, football, baseball, and track, and played for coach Taps Gallagher at Niagara University in the 1950s.
All eight inductees will be officially honored on Monday, Feb. 17 at the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club. Tickets for the dinner are priced at $50. Reservations can be made by calling chairman Chip Johnson at 485-6991.
