ALBANY – Chautauqua County may once again be part of a congressional district that stretches across much of the Southern Tier. The federal magistrate who has taken over New York’s congressional redistricting process has issued a draft of district lines that would take Chautauqua County out of the district that covers much of southern Erie county and part of the city of Buffalo. That district is currently represented by Congressman Brian Higgins.
Instead – if the plan is approved with little revisions – Chautauqua County would join the 23rd Congressional District – which stretches across the Southern Tier all the way to and including Tioga County. The district would also include Cattaraugus, Allegany, Steuben, Chemung, Schuyler, Yates Tompkins and Seneca counties – along with a portion of Ontario county.
Prior to the 2002 congressional reapportionment, Chautauqua County was part of New York’s 29th Congressional District, which covered a similar region.
The plan – which was released yesterday by U.S. Magistrate Roanne Mann – also calls for several other changes throughout the state, including merging the rest of Brian Higgins current congressional district with Kathy Hochul. A panel of judges will hold a hearing on her plan March 15 and vote on whether to adopt the changes.
A representative from Congressman Higgins’ office tells WRFA the Congressman is not commenting yet as the map is not final and things are still very fluid at this point.
