WEST VALLEY- The candidate running against Congressman Tom Reed (R-Corning, NY 23) in the 2018 General Election says more funding is needed to address the cleanup effort at the long-dormant West Valley Demonstration Project site in Cattaraugus County.
During a conference call with media on Tuesday, Tracy Mitrano (D-Penn Yan) said the $75 million per year over the next eight years Rep. Reed has worked to commit toward the project is woefully below the actual amount needed.
She said the actual amount needed for cleanup easily exceeds a billion dollars and residents throughout the entire region need someone in Congress who is willing to secure the full amount necessary to finally complete the cleanup.
Mitrano said without the proper funding levels, local waterways – including Lake Erie – and the water table in that area could be compromised by the nuclear waste that is sites in storage at the site.
