CORNING – One of the candidates vying for the Democratic Party’s nomination for congress in the hopes of challenging Rep. Tom Reed (R-Corning, NY 23) has suspended his campaign.
On Wednesday night during the Congressional Meet and Greet hosted by the Corning City Democrats, candidate Rick Gallant of Corning announced he would be suspending his campaign for the 23rd Congressional District.
Gallant, a school teacher in the Corning area and regional representative for NYSUT, cited difficulty in raising campaign funds.
As a result, the pool of candidates has now been reduced to five: Linda Andrei of Ithaca, Max Della Pia of Owego, Ian Golden of Ithaca, Tracy Mitrano of Penn Yann, and Eddie Sundquist of Jamestown.
“It has been great getting to know Rick throughout this campaign,” Golden said in a statement sent out Wednesday night. “We shared a commitment to fight for our unions and worker rights, and I am honored to carry that fight forward in this race.”
The candidates are currently in the process of seeking signatures from Democratic Party members in order to secure a spot on the party’s primary ballot, with a vote taking place in June.
Of the candidates, Mitrano has already received the endorsement of two other parties – the Working Families Party and the Women’s Equality Party.
